It has been a little while since I recorded a song, though actually I recorded one not too long ago that I was very happy about but it was of the spiritual variety and I shared it mostly with my family. (If you are interested in that sort of thing let me know). This one I recorded yesterday and it is a bit of a deviation from my lately folk ish bent, but it was inspired by something I heard that was so sweet…and I couldn’t tell you what it was…it’s about love, of course. So if you want a free mp3 of it let me know at thejunipertrees@gmail.com. It’s not quite done I have to add some fiddle but it will go out in the next couple of days. j

I just wanted to post about our 2 upcoming shows, and the Songbird Challenge. I just gave all 8 tracks to my friend Mark Raynes for mixing. I had planned to do 3 extra tracks, but 3 weeks of sickness, 2 of which were larygitis (from which I am still recovering) overrode those plans! Things somehow work out with some semblence of order, so I am just waiting to see what happens…

I am still excited to continue the Songbird Challenge. My goal is to write 100 songs! But I don’t want to get started until my voice is back, and since we have some shows coming up, I need to rest it.

Next week on Thursday, Feb.2, we are at The Walnut Room with Blow the Vault. Then, Feb. 11th we are at The Laughing Goat with Story and Clark. This is the show where I am claiming I will have a CD. I think it will happen, but the way the Universe has been, I am offering up life and just saying “whatever you decide” !

Hope to see you soon,

Jenna

The Songbird 8 week challenge is officially completed…in 9 weeks. The last one took me a little extra contemplation. So now it is time for voting! I want to know what your favorite four are of the bunch, and then I will record them with the band. Drums, upright bass, and banjo will be added! If you missed the tunes because you aren’t on the mailing list, just email us at thejunipertrees@yahoo.com with “Songbird Challenge” in the title, and I will send you all eight tracks.

A Songbird Challenge CD with all eight tracks and three mystery tracks will be available at The Juniper Trees show on Feb 11th at The Laughing Goat in Boulder, CO.

Also, we will have a live video webcast of our show at a private party on December 30th. It will be free to watch, so stay tuned for more information about that.

Last, but not least, I have made a decision about whether or not to continue the Songbird Challenge. My decision is yes. I have never felt more inspired musically than making music specifically to send to people. My recording skills are moving along at a snails pace and I am really enjoying the whole process. I will start up again after the holidays, and this will go on…indefinitely, until I feel like I need another break! So sign up at thejunipertrees@yahoo.com to receive weekly songs in your inbox.

My inspiration from the Songbird Challenge is why I included the picture of the Aurora Borealis. Such a beautiful natural phenomenon. What is your inspiration? Where does your creativity meet your inspiration? What do you want to share with the world? Feel free to add it in the comments below, or email us. I invite you to a challenge, to share weekly/monthly what you are inspired to create. And feel free to add us to your list.

Thanks as always for listening,

Jenna

Hi everyone, just wanted to update you on the Songbird Challenge. This will be week #5, we are almost over the hump of the eight week challenge! I have had lovely feedback and even got written up in the Westword Blog. It’s been an amazing journey so far, and I have learned a lot about my process of writing songs, and how much I enjoy sharing them. Recording is getting a bit easier too.

On February 11, 2012, The Juniper Trees will play at The Laughing Goat Coffee House in Boulder, with Story and Clark. I will have the completed Songbird Challenge 2011 CD, and on it will be the eight tracks, plus 3 mystery tracks. I will also do some tweaking and changing on the existing tracks as well. I have not decided on a price as it will depend on how much it costs me to put it together. But don’t worry, it will be affordable and if holiday funds are low donations will be accepted!

Also, The Juniper Trees have a great desire to play a house concert. All we need…is a house! Please let us know if you would like some romping music in your living room some time in January or beyond. We would take care of organizing, and you would get to enjoy a lovely evening of music and entertainment for free. If you are interested in hosting, or know someone who might be, email us at thejunipertrees@yahoo.com, or leave us a comment here. Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving!

Speaking of Thanksgiving, The Juniper Trees, minus Brian, will be having thanksgiving together this year. I am pretty excited about this. I hope your Turkey day is awesome!

The Juniper Trees is the new musical project of Jenna Herbst and former members of Sarina Simoom, a Denver based band. The Juniper Trees birthed from the decision to be re-inspired and re-invigorated by music and also to heal from the trauma of having a band name that no one, nor their mother, could pronounce or spell correctly. And dammit, spelling is important.

Yes, it’s true. The Juniper Trees will be turning zombie on October 22nd when we brave the massive Denver Zombie Crawl. We will be playing outside on the 16th Street Mall at 4:00PM, unless the weather is too cold for the undead, in which case we will move inside Chris’ apartment.

Some pictures of Denver zombies of old.

The Juniper Trees birthed from the decision to be re-inspired and re-invigorated by music and also to heal from the trauma of having a band name that no one, nor their mother, could pronounce or spell correctly. The Juniper Trees combine the twangy soul of rock with the modern folk sensibility. With banjo, classical and steel string guitar, harmonizing vocals, an occasional fiddle thrown in, upright bass, and eclectic drum styles, The Juniper Trees are a mix of rich melody, and non-traditional song structure and meter.

Jenna’s solo recordings are a soulful rendition of the songs; sparse, rhythmic and melodic, she is sometimes soaring, and sometimes driving. Check out her solo recordings on the Music page.

Jenna’s solo album, entitled “From My Living Room,” being recorded, guess where? You got it: In her living room, is due out in September.

The Juniper Trees are currently working on their first album as a band, and are still offering for sale all three albums by Sarina Simoom.
