It has been a little while since I recorded a song, though actually I recorded one not too long ago that I was very happy about but it was of the spiritual variety and I shared it mostly with my family. (If you are interested in that sort of thing let me know). This one I recorded yesterday and it is a bit of a deviation from my lately folk ish bent, but it was inspired by something I heard that was so sweet…and I couldn’t tell you what it was…it’s about love, of course. So if you want a free mp3 of it let me know at thejunipertrees@gmail.com. It’s not quite done I have to add some fiddle but it will go out in the next couple of days. j

I just had to post about last night’s show because I had such a nice time with my friend Teresa Storch and all who came out. As I have said, Teresa and I have known each other about 14 years and this was our first show together! Crazy. We traded songs, sang together, and played together. Thanks to the audience who were a really eclectic group of interesting people! The Laughing Goat is one of my favorite places to play music as there is such a creative and open atmosphere.

Also, on the walls at the Laughing Goat is some really really cool art. They are marionettes, handmade from felt and other materials, inside glass boxes. You can move them around yourself if you want. They were really beautiful and I highly suggest if you live in the Boulder area that you check them out.

This Thursday night I will be at Shine with more of my band members so come out and say hello!

CD Mix/Mastering, Art, Layout, and Photo - Mark Raynes; Photo of Jenna - Regan Drouin

I just wanted to thank everyone for the fantastic show on Saturday at the Laughing Goat, with Story and Clark. Thank you for coming out and contributing to such a joyful atmosphere. Songbird CD’s are here!! I am pretty excited about this considering it is my first solo CD and also that Mark Raynes worked so hard with mixing, turning out a very pleasing end result. Right now the only way to get the CD is at shows, and by emailing us at thejunipertrees@gmail.com. I will be getting it onto itunes and amazon in the next couple of months.

Just wanted to say thanks for the night of music, and also that we will be at The Walnut Room again on March 10th. Now we will be focusing on The Juniper Trees album, which is partially finished.

In addition, those of you on the mailing list know that I started up the Songbird Challenge again, with a new tune called The Shore. To get on the list and receive free mp3’s just email me at thejunipertrees@gmail.com. That’s right – FREE MUSIC. No strings attached. 🙂 Also, sign up to the right where it says “email subscription,” I only post about once a month and usually just to tell you about music available, new tunes, etc., that may not be on the mailing list.

And yes it is true that I have made the absurd self challenge of writing 100 songs within the context of the Songbird Challenge and including the 8 – song challenge I did and The Shore, I only have 91 songs to go.

See you in March, and do nourish the very heart of yourselves that beams with beauty,

Jenna

The Songbird 8 week challenge is officially completed…in 9 weeks. The last one took me a little extra contemplation. So now it is time for voting! I want to know what your favorite four are of the bunch, and then I will record them with the band. Drums, upright bass, and banjo will be added! If you missed the tunes because you aren’t on the mailing list, just email us at thejunipertrees@yahoo.com with “Songbird Challenge” in the title, and I will send you all eight tracks.

A Songbird Challenge CD with all eight tracks and three mystery tracks will be available at The Juniper Trees show on Feb 11th at The Laughing Goat in Boulder, CO.

Also, we will have a live video webcast of our show at a private party on December 30th. It will be free to watch, so stay tuned for more information about that.

Last, but not least, I have made a decision about whether or not to continue the Songbird Challenge. My decision is yes. I have never felt more inspired musically than making music specifically to send to people. My recording skills are moving along at a snails pace and I am really enjoying the whole process. I will start up again after the holidays, and this will go on…indefinitely, until I feel like I need another break! So sign up at thejunipertrees@yahoo.com to receive weekly songs in your inbox.

My inspiration from the Songbird Challenge is why I included the picture of the Aurora Borealis. Such a beautiful natural phenomenon. What is your inspiration? Where does your creativity meet your inspiration? What do you want to share with the world? Feel free to add it in the comments below, or email us. I invite you to a challenge, to share weekly/monthly what you are inspired to create. And feel free to add us to your list.

Thanks as always for listening,

Jenna

Hi everyone, just wanted to update you on the Songbird Challenge. This will be week #5, we are almost over the hump of the eight week challenge! I have had lovely feedback and even got written up in the Westword Blog. It’s been an amazing journey so far, and I have learned a lot about my process of writing songs, and how much I enjoy sharing them. Recording is getting a bit easier too.

On February 11, 2012, The Juniper Trees will play at The Laughing Goat Coffee House in Boulder, with Story and Clark. I will have the completed Songbird Challenge 2011 CD, and on it will be the eight tracks, plus 3 mystery tracks. I will also do some tweaking and changing on the existing tracks as well. I have not decided on a price as it will depend on how much it costs me to put it together. But don’t worry, it will be affordable and if holiday funds are low donations will be accepted!

Also, The Juniper Trees have a great desire to play a house concert. All we need…is a house! Please let us know if you would like some romping music in your living room some time in January or beyond. We would take care of organizing, and you would get to enjoy a lovely evening of music and entertainment for free. If you are interested in hosting, or know someone who might be, email us at thejunipertrees@yahoo.com, or leave us a comment here. Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving!

Speaking of Thanksgiving, The Juniper Trees, minus Brian, will be having thanksgiving together this year. I am pretty excited about this. I hope your Turkey day is awesome!

Hi, this is Jenna here. I just wanted to announce my personal song challenge for the holidays. I will be writing and recording one song per week, and doing “Songbird Tuesdays.” Every Tuesday I will send out a new song. So if you are interested in getting a new song each week in your inbox, please email at thejunipertrees@yahoo.com and we will put you on the mailing list. I am challenging myself to do this for eight weeks to start, after which I will request that everyone put the songs in order, from the most to least favorite. The top four will be recorded with the band on our next album.

Also, on the topics of new albums, The Juniper Trees are starting to record this month! We hope to have something completed by January.

Well, it appears that the zombie crawl pales in comparison to the real – life zombies of old in Ireland. This doesn’t surprise me. I knew that place was cool.

Come downtown tomorrow to the zombie crawl and see The Juniper Trees turned zombie, singing about….zombies. We will be outside on the 16th Street Mall, zombified and zombielicious.

And click on the photo to read about Irish Zombies!

The Juniper Trees is the new musical project of Jenna Herbst and former members of Sarina Simoom, a Denver based band. The Juniper Trees birthed from the decision to be re-inspired and re-invigorated by music and also to heal from the trauma of having a band name that no one, nor their mother, could pronounce or spell correctly. And dammit, spelling is important.

Yes, it’s true. The Juniper Trees will be turning zombie on October 22nd when we brave the massive Denver Zombie Crawl. We will be playing outside on the 16th Street Mall at 4:00PM, unless the weather is too cold for the undead, in which case we will move inside Chris’ apartment.

Some pictures of Denver zombies of old.
